The audible differences between conversion of two modern interfaces is so small that it is difficult to prove. It isn’t an easy audio test to do with any scientific rigor. The main reason I haven’t heard conversion differences is that I’ve never been able to set up a test where conversion is the only difference between A and B. Conversion differences between modern interfaces are much more subtle, to the degree that I can’t say that I’ve ever heard that particular difference. Preamps ARE different, and that sometimes subtle difference can often be heard in an honest test. It isn’t deliberately dishonest, but the human psyche is not wired to be completely honest when we want to believe something, and particularly when we have money on a new horse in the race.ĭon’t misunderstand me. That contradicts what we know about the length of detailed audio memory, and it involves so much unconscious buyer’s bias that the “OH, WOW!” is completely meaningless. Most of the “OH, WOW!” Reports are not from AB comparisons, but from “I unplugged all the old stuff and plugged in the new stuff” comparisons. Please enlighten me if you have different experiences.īeing disappointed in an honest (blind) AB comparison of interface preamps or conversion is a common reaction. Money are better spent elsewhere in the studio. I am beginning to think that upgrading the interface it an expensive and small improvement.

Should I keep the digi 003 and get a better DA converter/monitor box that I can feed with from the ADAT?

Buy digi 003 drivers#
It is no longer supported by AVID, but it still works in protools and the ASIO drivers are decent? Should I buy a u47 and keep the digi 003. Should I take the audient back to the store?
Buy digi 003 series#
It also makes me wounder how much better the more expensive boxes like the RME UCX, Antelope Audio DISCRETE 8 and Apogee Element series are. I find it strange that they are so similar. I don't think I have read anything bad about the audient. The Digi always gets a hammering for its bad conversion and boring preamps. I have read I lot of vs discussions and reviews.

So, does not matter if the difference is bigger on better gear. Maybe the difference would be bigger with a better microphone or better monitors? The people that buy gear in this price range rarely have really good mics like u47. It is not something that makes my productions any better. The audient are better, but by a small margin. The old drivers on the digi give me the same buffer sizes without poping and cracking. With this I mean that the sound changes more if I move my mouth two centimeters when I sing, than when I change preamp and converter. On vocal there was no practical difference. I recorded many tracks to see if the whole mix would add up the difference. There might be a more defined low end on the audient, but most of the time I cannot distinguish between them. I recorded acoustic guitar and vocals trough a røde nt2 (first gen) microphone straight into the preamps of the digi and the audient. The audient has better DA conversion, but again with a smal margin. I also feed the audient the ADAT output from the Digi. There is not a practical difference when you know the gear. The audient is more clear and transparent, but it is not a big improvement. I tried to listen to quite complex mixes. I have dynaudio acoustics BM6A monitors and beyerdynamic dt 770 headphones. I am disappointed that the difference is not bigger between the digi003 and the audient. I did not like the octopus syndrom design. I don't need the pulgins or the prosessing power.

Things I didn't need (USBhub RCA) only two preamps She's been around for a while.Īfter a long read up on different interfaces I ended up whit this short list. I finally took the plunge and upgraded my old trusty Digi 003.
